HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) -- There are several events going on Monday throughout the Valley to honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Local leaders held a ceremony to formally rename Cantrell Avenue to Martin Luther King, Jr. Way.
The new signs have already been installed, but Monday marks the official renaming of the street.
The ceremony started at Noon at JMU's Memorial Hall.
It included music and reflection about the renaming.
One of the groups attending is from Eastern Mennonite University.
Students there also held a program about King this morning.
Jered Lyons, a member of the EMU community believes it's important for the campus to honor King.
"Today we want to take some time to commemorate MLK, and what he's done for nonviolence and peace. That's something that EMU holds dear to their heart, and is at the core of their mission, is nonviolence and peace," said Lyons.
When the ceremony ends, there will be a ribbon cutting ceremony and then there will be a unity march beginning at Memorial Hall.
The march will be along the new Martin Luther King, Jr. Way up to South Main Street and back.
The road will be closed from Route 42 up to South Main Street during that time.
