ROCKINGHAM COUNTY-- A car chase in Rockingham County ends with two people in custody.
The driver, Henry Eric Routon, 40, from Callaway, Va. faces multiple charges. These include reckless driving, speeding (police say he was going 103 in a 65 mph zone), felony elude, grand larceny, possession of controlled substance, driving with revoked/suspended license, possession of fraudulent identification and an open container. He is also wanted in Franklin County on charges of manuafacturing meth.
The passenger, Michelle Johnson Page, 38, from Rocky Mount, Va. faces three charges: one count of manufacturing meth, one count for possession of controlled substance and one count for possession of stolen goods.
Both are held without bond.
A Virginia State Police trooper was pursuing a black SUV traveling northbound on Interstate 81. VSP reports that the SUV was traveling at a high rate of speed shortly after 2 p.m. Monday.
When a trooper caught up with the SUV, the driver did not stop. Troopers pursuing the SUV say the driver crossed over the median into the southbound lanes of Interstate 81. The driver eventually exited the interstate at the Broadway exit (Exit 257.)
The SUV came to a stop when it collided with the trooper's car at a Park & Ride lot off of Route 259 near the Rockingham County Refuse Transfer Station & Recycling Center.
Another trooper responding to the incident was involved in a crash on Route 259 near Broadway, after losing control of a cruiser. The cruiser ended up in a ditch at the side of the highway. The trooper suffered minor injuries.
