PENN LAIRD --- An Elkton woman was flown to the University of Virginia Medical Center after a car crash near Spotswood High School.
Virginia State Police reported the following:
Delores D. Shifflett, 73, Elkton was driving a 2001 Ford Taurus west on Rt 33 Wednesday morning. She came across an intersection in which the traffic lights were flashing yellow because they were under repair. Police believe Shifflett thought she was about to run a red light, so she braked her car abruptly.
That's when police say Virginia H. Fulginiti, 37, Elkton rear-ended Shifflett's Taurus with her 2000 Chevrolet Suburban. The collision forced Shifflett's car into the intersection.
Fulginiti was driving a 15-year old and a toddler, but no one in her car was injured. Police charged her with reckless driving.
Shifflett was flown to the University of Virginia Medical Center with serious injuries.
Police estimate the total damages of the car wreck to be about $22,000.
