STAUNTON-- Presidents' Day is a big day for retailers and car dealers. They're trying to take advantage of the fact that people are off work.

Many car makers have been trying to entice people to buy with deals and catchy ads, including a Honda ad that features several president's singing.

At Valley Honda, dealers are expecting a weekend. On a normal day, they've been selling about six cars, according to president Scott Simons. On Saturday, they sold 17 cars, and on Monday they had 15 appointments scheduled.

Simons said dealerships consider Presidents' Day the first holiday of the year they try to capitalize on with sales. "They put a lot of emphasis on it because you transition off of fourth quarter, and this is the first quarter. This is the big major sale," he said. The impending spring is also a factor that gets people to buy, he said.

Simons said sales there have been very strong so far this year, up 73% in January compared to last year. Nationwide, sales were up 14%.
