Matt Chan is the Adoption Volunteer Coordinator at Cat's Cradle in Downtown Harrisonburg. People are greeted at the door by many purring faces roaming free throughout the shelter.
The shelter has been undergoing renovations since January, but Chan said all that is left to complete is the main desk.
The new tactile design really makes the whole space cat friendly.
Cats can literally climb the walls thanks to the cat friendly boxes. These boxes make a perfect space for lounging or playing.
The walls at Cat's Cradle were transformed into a kitty jungle gym thanks to the steps and boxes. Wood and supplies were donated by Tom Dawson, a board member for Cat's Cradle, and Valley Building.
Cats can stare down at visitors from the windowsill. That is thanks to the bright orange staircase attached to the wall.
Cats do not have to just stop at the windowsill, thanks to a special cat-friendly design, the feline residents of the shelter can hang out on the ceiling.
For the cats who would rather stay on the ground, Cat's Cradle has many vintage suitcases that they transformed into pet beds.
Even the printer was a cat friendly place to sit.
Of course, the shelter also has traditional cat comforts such as scratching posts.
The front of the building is made up of glass panels, so people walking by can stop to look at the cats.
It seems that every cranny of the shelter holds a cat. The new renovations allow the cats to hide or sunbathe wherever they please.
Cats sit by the door to watch the downtown sidewalks.
One of the benefits of a cage free shelter is that the cats socialize with each other. That way, they can transition into multi-cat homes easily.
The cats are already tested for disease, de-wormed and given all of the necessary shots. Staff keeps the cats in a 14-day quarantine just to make sure they are healthy before the cats roam free.
