ELKTON -- The Upper Room Church hosted the fifth annual freedom weekend celebration. It's a three-day long celebration of freedom.
"It's an event I look forward to every year because there is a lot that goes on," said Adam Shifflett, a member of the Upper Room Church.
The event was more than just about celebrating freedom, it was also about helping children in our community.
All the proceeds will go towards filling book bags with perishable items for students at East Rockingham High School
"They take them home on Fridays, bring them back on Mondays and they are filled with foods for them to have to eat all through the weekends for those that don't have food," said Barbara Hensley, a pastor at Upper Room Church.
During the 2012-2013 school term, around twenty five East Rockingham High school students were fed through the anonymous program.
"So that there is no shame and the children are not meant to feel bad in any way," said Hensley.
This is the first year that all the revenue from the annual Freedom Weekend celebration will go towards supporting the Backpack program through Rockingham County Schools.
