HARRISONBURG, Va.--- A fire department emphasizes the importance of checking smoke detectors to prevent tragedies. As people change their clocks an hour back, they can also make sure they are working properly.
Harrisonburg Fire Department Lieutenant Fire Prevention Wanda Willis said you should check smoke alarms once a month or at least once a year. According to Willis, it is important to see if they need a new battery or need to be replaced.
She said after 10 years, smoke alarms will not react as quickly due to dust build up.
"Smoke alarms definitely save lives and they won't work unless you have them working and make sure you have batteries in them," said Willis.
She said you should also teach your children what to do in case the alarm goes off. If they are not working, you can contact the Harrisonburg or Rockingham county to help you.
