PETERSBURG, W.Va. (WHSV) -- Petersburg High School's Cheyenne Ealre steps up when the pressure is at its highest.
"Cheyenne is what I would call a clutch player. She just has that leadership, and you know that she's gonna come through," said Dwayne Hedrick, Cheyenne's softball coach.
She comes through routinely for the Vikings, especially during the team's postseason run last year, when she led Petersburg to its first-ever state playoff appearance.
"It was a really exciting experience for us because we had goals set throughout the whole season, and I was like wow, we just made it to state for the first time in school history. It was just an exciting experience." said Cheyenne.
There's no doubt Cheyenne is one of the best softball players in her school's history, but she's also one of its top students, sporting a 4.5 GPA.
"I know that sports may not always be there for me, so I need to have a plan. I need to make sure I do well in school so that I have a career ahead of me," said Cheyenne.
"It's great to be able to point at kids like Cheyenne and say here's someone who can excel in the classroom, she's among the top of her class academically, yet she's also one of the better athletes at the school as well," said Jon Webster, Cheyenne's calculus teacher.
"I look to further my softball career in college, and I also plan to major in biomedical sciences and then go in to medical research," said Cheyennne.
