FRONT ROYAL, Va. (WHSV) -- The Front Royal Police Department responded to a tragic accident early Saturday evening on South Street.

Ja’Marion Tyreek Dawson, a 6-year-old kindergartner from Hilda J. Barbour Elementary School, was crossing the street unattended in front of the McDonald's when he was struck and killed by a green Toyota 4-Runner.

The child had become separated from his family at the Martin's Grocery Store. Once he could not locate them, he exited the store on foot in the direction of his residence in the area behind McDonald's.

Chief Norman Shiflett advises that neither speed nor alcohol played a factor in this tragic heartbreaking incident. He requests the public give the family the time and respect to mourn during this difficult time.

Shiflett commends the prompt response of the Front Royal Warren County Fire & Rescue, Virginia State Police and the deputies who responded from the Warren County Sheriff’s Office. The accident investigation is being conducted by the Front Royal Police Department with assistance from the Virginia State Police Accident Reconstruction Team.
