Church Looking for a Leader in Wake of Arrest

BRIDGEWATER, Va. (WHSV)-- Pastor Tony Martin leads the Spring Creek Church of the Nazarene near Bridgewater. He says the arrest of Leonard 'Sonny' Layman on Aug. 12 has been hard for everyone in the congregation.

Layman's sex-related charges stem from an incident that happened off of church property within Layman's own family.

Martin wants the community to know that those charges have nothing to do with the church.

"It's a shock. When somebody has been with you that long and then you hear something of that caliber. Our people were kind of shocked. We shared with them Sunday morning, even though it's something that happened outside the church, he's still a leader in the church. It trickles on down," said Martin.

Martin said he has a congregation of about 200. They're working to continue the positive impact they've had on the community here despite this difficult time.

Meanwhile Layman faces three counts of aggravated sexual battery. He also faces four counts of indecent liberties with a child.
