Rudy Dean, the Rockingham County man accused of shooting another man, is seeking the help of supporters of the Second Amendment to pay for his new attorney.

Citizens for Rudy Dean held a fundraiser to help cover the costs. They sold tables and accepted donations at a lunch concert Saturday afternoon.

Dean is out on bond and awaiting trial after allegedly shooting Robert Crawford in the neck. Dean's supporters claim it was self defense. They say Crawford approached Dean's car carrying a police baton because of road rage.

Dean was initially denied bond, which caused much debate.

His new attorney is Onzlee Ware, a representative in the Virginia House of Delegates. Ware says Dean is optimistic about the case.

"He's not bitter. He's hopeful. And, he still believes in the American judicial system. The only thing Mr. Dean has always asked for is just a fair shake at a trial, which I believe he'll get," Ware said.

Dean is expected in court for two days late in September.
