City Ordinance Requires Sidewalk Work

HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) -- If you're out, you may notice that some of the sidewalks may not be plowed.

In Harrisonburg, building or home owners have to clear snow soon after it stops falling.

Riner Rentals worked to clear a sidewalk in front of one of its rental properties; however, it quickly became covered again.

By city ordinance, owners have to clear snow or ice from a sidewalk three hours after the snow has stopped falling.

If the sidewalk is not cleared, the chief of police could issue a warrant for violating the ordinance.

Paul Riner, who owns Riner Rentals, said they have extra contractors on standby to get sidewalks cleared.

"And 15 minutes after they're cleared, they're covered over again so you try to kind of keep up with it so you don't have a pile of snow to move all at once. But, it can make it difficult, especially those times when the snow stops overnight," said Riner.

The City of Harrisonburg does have contractors clear certain sidewalks downtown.

With the chance for freezing overnight, it's better to get all this shoveling done as soon as possible.
