RICHMOND, Va. The Civil War Trust has reached a $40 million fund-raising goal with more than a year to spare.

Now the nonprofit battlefield preservation organization is looking to raise an additional $10 million. The trust says the drive is the largest fundraising project undertaken by an American heritage land preservation group.

To date, the trust has preserved more than 38,500 battlefield acres in 20 states. Much of that preservation has occurred in Virginia, where a good portion of the Civil War was fought. Some recent acquisitions are Gaines' Mill and Fleetwood Hill at Brandy Station.
