NEW MARKET -- Leaders with the Virginia Civil War museum are getting ready for the annual reenactment. They are restoring some original cannons.

The museum has many different artifacts, but one thing that really draws attention are the old cannons. Organizers said they want to restore those cannons to be a more exact replica of what they looked like nearly 150 years ago.

To do this, workers at the museum restored the old Civil War cannons. Most of the cannons were covered with rust and needed some welding, a new paint job. A few old bird nests were even in some of the cannons.

Major Troy Marshall said doing this will give an authentic look to the battlefield. He said he's amazed that a cannon, which was so harmful years ago is now something that everyone is obsessed with.

"But to be able to actually touch this, it makes it more real for me. Because I would have to imagine that there would be eight men standing around servicing this weapon receiving fire from cannons," said Marshall.

Marshall did want to express that once the restoration is completed, parents shouldn't let children crawl on the cannons.

The reenactment takes place during the weekend after Mother's Day, which is May 18th and 19th. If you want to see the cannons in person, they will be on display and used during the re-enactment.

This year marks the 149th anniversary.
