PENDLETON COUNTY, W. Va. (WHSV) -- It's straight to business for Pendleton County High School's Cody Lambert who leads the Wildcats' basketball team.
A lot basketball players look for the limelight and aim for the flash, the bells and the whistles, but not so much for Cody. A point guard for the Wildcats, he only cares about the bells and whistles that are on the court.
"He's not a statistical guy. He is more of leader and a general out there, kind of an extension of me on the sideline," said Ryan Lambert, Cody's basketball coach.
"Personal stats don't win you the game. It doesn't really help you at all. I'm more focused on winning," said Cody.
The Wildcats have been winning with Cody as one of their leaders.
"Some of the games we've had slow starts and that really brings us down, so we need to make sure we're ready every time we step out on the court," said Cody.
"He wants to be there. He likes the hard work. As the head coach in trying to move the program from point A to point B, that's what you want," said Lambert.
Cody takes that work ethic into the classroom as well, maintaining a 3.8 GPA and leads classes by being an example.
"He comes from a line of people where this is what you're expected to do so just go do it. I think he carries all of that into the classroom," said Pat Godfrey, Cody's English teacher.
"The biggest thing is doing my homework because that really helps me get ready for class. When you walk into the classroom turn the switch to get ready to learn," said Cody.
Cody is already putting work in for next year, as he plans to study engineering at West Virginia University.
"I'm taking a lot of college classes this year so I can get ready for that type of class and the level of difficulty. They make you think more about stuff, use a deeper level of thinking that I haven't had to use before," said Cody.
"Its not a bunch of flair, not a bunch of bells and whistles. He's a smart kid who's a grinder is the best way to put it. He's a grinder," said Godfrey.
