HARRISONBURG, Va. –- Eastern Mennonite University's president signed a letter to Congress asking to support more gun control. It calls for better safety standards, a ban on semi-automatic assault weapons and closing loopholes at gun shows.

EMU's president said increased gun control aligns with part of the university's mission of promoting peace.

“Obviously, we were all very grieved over what happened in Newtown. The timing seemed appropriate to speak into the question of what can we do to make our campus and our society safer than they already are,” said EMU President Loren Swartzendruber.

The letter is in response to the shootings at an elementary school in Newtown, Ct.
