HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) -- Parents in 44 states are adapting to helping their children with homework that uses the Common Core Learning Standards.

Critics complain it's fuzzy math and not the typical way to do arithmetic. Virginia has not adopted those standards for math and English and instead uses the Virginia Standards of Learning.

Although math does involve reading and reason, John Patrick Lintner, the assistant superintendent of instruction for Harrisonburg City Schools said it prepares kids for the future.

"There's an adjustment, oftentimes for parents, to new curriculum. Methodology has changed, they do overtime, oftentimes it's technology driven and so there's different ways that people can approach problems," said Lintner.
