Neighbors in Churchville hosted two fundraising events on Saturday to help a man in need.

Lewis Stokes lost four members of his family in a fire in December.

"It means a lot, a real lot. I didn't know so many people cared about this family," Stokes said.

He said he only had insurance to cover his wife's funeral expenses.

"Every little bit helps either one way of the other," Stokes said.

Nearly 50 neighbors, even some of the youngest, helped cook, sell and serve meals on Saturday to help him pay for the other funerals.

Volunteer Steve Morris estimates the events to raise at least $5,000.

However, he said volunteers won't know the exact numbers for a few days because they are still waiting on contributions from some organizations.

"This is probably one of the best fundraisers that has been held in the Churchville community," Morris said.

According to Morris, they started selling barbecue chicken at 8:30 a.m. and chicken dinners at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday.

"When you can have 300 dinners and be sold out by 4:45 p.m., that's super. When you can have 850 pieces of chicken in the morning and have it sold by 10:30 a.m. That's super."

Don Hanger is eating at the dinner.

He said he can't imagine what the Stokes family is going through.

"It can happen to any of us anytime and that's one reason we come together like this because who knows when your last day is gonna be here on this earth," Hanger said.

Stokes said he was lucky to survive the fire.

He considers himself even luckier to have the support of his community.

"I do know that this community does have an awful lot of nice people in here," Stokes said.
