WAYNESBORO, Va -- Pat Grochmal and Al Cadaret have been neighbors in the Brandon Gate Townhomes in Waynesboro for years.
They're upset about a new housing and commercial development called Waynesboro Place coming in right behind their neighborhood. They're concerned the new development may bring more people and traffic to the area.
Over 200 apartments are under construction and many businesses are expected to buy some of the land in the area, paving the way for shops and restaurants.
Grochmal says the development will bring increased traffic which poses a risk to children.
"It is quite a few children running in that area so if that street becomes busier that could be an accident waiting to happen," says Grochmal.
Caradet lives behind Ladd Elementary which will also be sold and re-developed.
He's worried the construction will hit the property values of the homes in the neighborhood.
"Because of this encroachment of commercial product, my house becomes less sale-able everyday and that upsets me," says Cadaret.
Both say they want to see the city develop of policy of protecting residential properties from being surrounded by commercial developments.
"Allow for a large easement between our property line and the beginning of the development and then in that easement, build a physical barrier," says Cadaret.
The apartments are expected to be finished by the end of this year.
