STAUNTON, Va.-- Kangaroo Express hosted its third "Salute Our Troops" military celebration in Staunton. The event raises awareness and money for troops and their families.
The store donates all the proceeds to organizations, such as USO and Fisher House Foundation. The non-profits connect troops with their families and donate homes to military families and the Department of Veteran Affairs.
Veteran Byron Terry who played at the event said supporting events like this is a must.
"People have forgotten about the war, they've let it go and you can't let it go when you have fighting men over there risking your life for your freedom. So you have to do what you can to help them," said Terry.
More than 1,200 attended the event, raising nearly $564. Janet higgins is one of them.
"I think that anybody who is there risking their lives for all of us to be here needs all of the support that can be given, if not more," said Higgins.
She said it does not matter, if she is not related to them.
"I don't know anyone personally who is overseas. But I can just imagine if it was someone that i knew so that's how i try to look at it," said Higgins.
Kangaroo Express has raised money for this effort since June. This store has raised over $2,300 surpassing its $1,600 goal.
Employee Ricky Doyle said the money can make a difference.
"They are forgotten so this is a great thing," said Doyle.
For Terry, every little bit helps.
"This little bit of money does help the families and the wounded soldiers to get by until they can get their benefits," said Terry.
People can donate $1 or spare change Kangaroo Express when shopping through Sept. 3.
