HARRISONBURG, VA. (WHSV) -- A local branch of the Department of Social Services has released numbers regarding the Cooling Assistance program.

Already this summer, in Harrisonburg and Rockingham County, close to 500 families have been approved for help. The number of families who will be approved this year is likely to match up closely to the amount in years past.

Recent years have averaged about 1,000 families getting approved for help, according to records from the Department of Social Services in Harrisonburg and Rockingham County.

Tammy Zeller, who lives in Broadway, uses a similar program in the winter and she says this time of year, any help to stay cool, is needed,"The heat is just unbearable sometimes. If you have small children, the same thing. You want to make sure you can come into an air-conditioned place so the children can cool down and they don't get sick or have sun stroke. Yeah, it's absolutely very important"

To receive help from the Cooling Assistance program, there are certain guidelines everyone must meet. Click the link to the right to learn more.
