WEYERS CAVE -- On Thursday, an explosion at a fertilizer plant in Texas injured more than 165 people and was powerful enough to shake houses 50 miles away.
A WHSV reporter checked in with a local fertilizer company to find out if anything like that could ever happen in the Valley.
Houff Feed and Fertilzier blends together nearly 10,000 tons of fertilizer every year.
Neil Houff, its president, said an explosion similar to the one in Texas would be unlikely here. He said that's because of regional differences in fertilizer around the country. It all depends on the types of chemicals in the fertilizer.
Houff said all jobs do come with risk and safety is a priority.
“It's unfortunate, but I think a series of unfortunate circumstances created the explosive environment that happened in Waco,” said Houff.
Houff Fertilizer ships fertilizer to farms around the Valley.
