AUGUSTA COUNTY, Va. -- Holiday spirit filled Augusta Health on Monday morning.
Jimmy Fortune, of the country music group, Statler Brothers, treated an Augusta Health crowd to a free show just in time for the holidays. The Statler Brothers have been around for decades, so many people in the hospital remember the band from years ago.
At least 50 patients at the hospital went to the lobby and crowds of people lined the upper-levels, just to hear their hometown celebrity sing.
Jimmy Fortune, his brother and a long-time friend volunteered to sing at the hospital. They sang some Statler Brother favorites and other country classics.
Fortune said he tries to do a concert at the hospital every year for patients.
“Some of them have been in here for months, some, maybe even years,” said Fortune, “For those people, my heart goes out to them. If we can just put a heart on their faces and they say, 'Man, this does feel like Christmas.' That's all I want.”
He said giving back to the community in whatever way he can has always been important to him and to the Statler Brothers band.
