STAUNTON, Va. (WHSV) -- A bizarre trend involving beeswax lip balm is growing among teens.
A growing swarm of YouTube videos provides evidence that "beezin" is beginning to take flight.
Beezin is putting Burt's Bees beeswax lip balm not on your lips, but on your eye lids instead
"Who decided to put Burt's Bees on their eyelids? It's so ridiculous to me," said one Staunton woman.
Teenagers have begun doing this for the buzz it provides. According to Urban Dictionary, the tingling is "freaky yet pleasurable." Doctors say the buzz comes from the peppermint oil in the product; however, the thing always to remember about bees? They sting.
"So if something like peppermint oil gets into the eye, it's almost like being pepper sprayed. It's going to be very irritating to the eyes. Your eyes are going to become very watery, tear a great deal and be very irritated," said Dr. Paul McConnell who works at Eye One Optical.
To many it's a trend as explainable and bizarre as it sounds.
"I have no clue why somebody would do it," said another Staunton woman.
"It amazes me how, what I would consider an innocent product, get used in very perverse ways," said Steve Grumman, a Staunton resident, "I think it's most unfortunate that people, kids, whoever, go to those lengths to get a thrill. You don't need to go to those kinds of lengths."
McConnell said you shouldn't put anything in your eye that isn't designed specifically for your eye.
