Dangers of Leaving Kids Home Alone Too Early

HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) -- A Newport News man faces charges of leaving his two children home alone. The two children were four and seven years old, according to police.

The arrest is leaving some people to ask, 'what is a good age to start leaving kids at home alone?'

Several licensed counselors say it's hard to determine an exact age because every child is different.

Professional counselor Sean Slevin said you risk a child's physical and emotional well-being if they are not ready to be left alone.

He says pushing a child too early could be traumatic.

Doug Blyers's oldest son is seven years old. He thinks he would be fine being home alone in an emergency situation, but he said you can never be too careful.

"Just for that worst case scenario. You just never know when something's going to happen. My feeling is if you don't really have to leave them why take the chance, even though it may be very slim," Blyers said.

Some parents said they would probably wait until their kids reached high school before leaving them home alone.
