CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. The black Ovation Celebrity guitar Dave Matthews played back in ’91 and ’92 when the Dave Matthews Band (DMB) was first performing is going on auction at charitybuzz.com.

The guitar was purchased from Matthews in 1992 by singer-songwriter, Blue O’Connell.

Matthews and O’Connell met in the late ‘80’s when both were getting their start in the music scene in Charlottesville. After purchasing the guitar, O’Connell performed with it on a regular basis, but stopped after DMB became famous.

O’Connell recently donated the guitar to be auctioned off online to benefit the Music Resource Center. The center is a first-of-its-kind multifaceted teen center in Charlottesville that uses recording and performing arts, as well as life skills mentoring, to create a sense of empowerment and accomplishment for at-risk teens.

Matthews signed the guitar for the auction. The inscription reads, “This old guitar I play for many years.”

When recently asked about the guitar, Matthews said, “All kinds of things were happening right for me when I bought this guitar. I was full of hope and dreams and things didn't seem impossible. I couldn't get enough. I have many memories wrapped with this guitar.”
