RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- The State Board of Elections has certified Democrat Lynwood W. Lewis Jr. as the victor in a special election for Virginia's 6th Senate District.

With Lewis' single-digit edge over Republican B. Wayne Coleman, a recount appears likely. The special election was Tuesday for a seat representing Norfolk and the Eastern Shore.

The vote was certified Friday by the State Board of Elections in Richmond.

The election is intended to find a Senate successor for Democrat Ralph Northam, who successfully ran for lieutenant governor.

The outcome of the race is important because of the 20-20 party divide of the Senate. A win by the Democratic in a special election in northern Virginia later this month would keep the split.

Northam casts the deciding vote when the Senate is evenly divided.
