ALEXANDRIA, Va. (WHSV) -- A lawsuit has been filed against Republican Bob McDonnell, Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli and the State Elections Board.
The Democratic party of Virginia claimed tens of thousands of voters could be wrongfully purged from voter rolls. They said officials are pushing a plan to purge 57,000 registered voters.
This is because an interstate database has them registered in other states, but Democrats believe the list contains errors.
The lawsuit filed in Alexandria says state officials told county registrars to use their "best judgment" about purging voters.
The State Board of Elections pointed to a statement which says that the Virginia code and federal law require state and local election officials to conduct list maintenance activities to ensure the accuracy of the voter rolls. Specifically, the code of Virginia mandates, in coordination with local election officials, to take action to remove a voter from the rolls when Virginia has received official notification from another state that the voter has registered in its state.
