AUGUSTA COUNTY, Va --- Fifth grader Beyonce Mass's teeth are a little cleaner thanks to Augusta Regional Dental Clinic's dentist office. They visited Riverheads Elementary school to clean kids teeth.

“I was at first a little scared, because I've never done this before, but then once they started, it was like I was at the dentist,” said Beyonce.

Mass said she has been to the dentist before, but some of her classmates have not and that was why the dentists showed up. Dentists say often this is the first visit for some students to get dental treatment, so they wanted to make it fun. They gave the students things like stickers, toothbrushes and toothpaste to encourage a return visit.

“Most kids can't get to the dentist as much, but I think it's really good for them because some kids haven't been to the dentist in awhile, and it's like the little dentist here at school.”

Dentists x-rayed students' teeth, cleaned them and put sealent on the teeth to prevent cavities. Dr. Kess Collins worked with nearly 100 students' teeth on Monday. She hopes the dentist visit on Monday will help kids to form healthy hygiene habits.

“That's the hope,” said Collins. “That we might be getting kids that might not be getting dental care, and giving them a little bit of education so they're aware about the importance of brushing their teeth and taking care of them for the future. So, that's a good feeling.”

Collins and the other two clinic dentists want to expand the program this fall to middle schools to reach even more students like Beyonce.

“It feels great. It feels good. It's like, I know I'm alright. I know I'm good,” said Beyonce.

The clinic already has plans to visit Wilson Middle School later this year.

The team of dentists sees more than 2,000 patients every year, including adults, at its office in Fishersville.
