HARRISONBURG, Va. A group from the Department of Energy will be in town Thursday to tour Harrisonburg and see how the area is becoming more environmentally friendly.
Not only will the group visit local universities, it will also visit downtown Harrisonburg.
Charles Hendricks, a local architect with The Gaines Group, said efforts to revitalize the downtown area really kicked into high gear recently, in the early 2000s.
He said by taking old buildings and reusing them for different purposes, is very green and sustainable.
"We want to show them how revitalization can take place in downtown and what sustainability looks like in built form. That is what we have here in Harrisonburg. This is an extremely vibrant downtown and it keeps growing and getting better," said Hendricks.
As part of the tour, the group will visiting Eastern Mennonite University, who recently won a STARS award, for their commitment to sustainability.
In fact, Hendricks said, the solar ray on the roof of their library is the second largest in the state.
