Deputies Charge Fort Valley Man With Voluntary Manslaughter

SHENANDOAH COUNTY, Va. (WHSV) -- The Shenandoah County Sheriff’s Office charged a Fort Valley man with voluntary manslaughter after the death of a Winchester man Monday evening.

Daniel Scott Harvey, 33, was arrested as a result of the investigation into the shooting of 36-year-old Harry Grant Nelson III.

Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to Harvey's home, 600 Stephens Lane, Fort Valley, Va., for a reported shooting Monday at approximately 7:18 p.m.

At this time, Harvey has been charged with one count of voluntary manslaughter and is currently being held without bond in the Shenandoah County Jail. The court date is set for April 11, 2014 in Shenandoah County General District Court.

The investigation is still ongoing.

Shenandoah County Sheriff Timothy Carter said sharing the death of a loved one with family members is never easy.

"Of course, it's not a simple thing. It's not an easy thing, but those things are things we have to do and we try to do it as professionally as we can," he shared.

The sheriff added, "The assailant and one of the witnesses had a former relationship. Apparently, there was a dispute over that, and that's what escalated this incident."

The sheriff's office will continue collecting evidence and talking to people who live in the area to get an idea of what may have led to this fight. Once they have all that evidence collected, they'll take it to the commonwealth's attorney. is happy to provide a forum for commenting and discussion. Please respect and abide by the house rules:
