AUGUSTA COUNTY, Va. -- Joseph Sholes, an Augusta County Sheriff's deputy, is in stable condition after he was involved in a car crash on Saturday night. He was flown to the University of Virginia Medical Center.

His car was uncovered Monday afternoon at the sheriff's office to show the damage. The front end was completely smashed from a tree that the deputy hit responding to an emergency call of a fight involving six people.

Sheriff Randy Fisher said Deputy Sholes has multiple leg injuries, but he said it doesn't appear that there are any upper body injuries.

Sheriff Fisher said the incident has affected the team.

“Quite a few of the guys are shook over this. They were at the scene while they were trying to get Joe out of the car. His wife is a dispatcher at ECC. He has two kids,” said Sheriff Fisher.

The cause of the accident is still unclear. The sheriff's office is waiting for state police to gather crash data from equipment in the car.
