HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) -- The JMU Women's Soccer team is putting together care packages for troops deployed overseas.
The player who came up with the idea has a special connection with one of the soldiers receiving a package. Alyssa Zurlo's brother, Matthew, is currently deployed in Afghanistan.
She and the rest of the Dukes are packing a box of goodies for his platoon of around twenty soldiers. "My family and friends have been shipping stuff over there so I came up with the idea and wanted to support my brother as well," said Zurlo.
They put grab and go foods as well as small things to do, like crossword puzzles and tennis balls in the package.
Two boxes have already been sent overseas this semester. Zurlo uses these packages to show support for her brother.
"He calls home every two weeks or so, but I'm not able to talk to him so I slip some letters in the packages, just to write to him. I can keep in contact with him a little bit on the internet but not as much so I just fill him in on my life," continued Zurlo.
This won't be the last package that the team sends to the troops. They have one more planned in the next month.
