HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) -- According to the Harrisonburg-Rockingham Chamber of Commerce, our area has a higher percentage of the population, 25 and older, going back to get their bachelor's or professional degree.
Travis Pettit, the program representative for Eastern Mennonite University's Adult Completion Program, said about one-third of their undergraduates, are adult students and many of them end up staying in the area after graduation.
Pettit said local employers are familiar with the curriculum of our local schools and some of the adult students even get help paying for tuition through their employers, which is another reason they would want to stay around even longer.
"It enriches the community. Obviously everyone is furthering their education and it makes for a stronger community. We aren't experiencing a brain drain where everyone gets their education and then moves out of the area. So, it benefits everyone by having them stay here," said Pettit.
Frank Tamberrino with the Harrisonburg- Rockingham Chamber of Commerce said this high percentage of graduates helps support businesses in our area, by providing an extra consumer base.
