STAUNTON (WHSV)-- A candidate for congress is ending his run because of a cancer diagnosis.

Bruce Elder was seeking the Democratic nomination for the sixth district. Bob Goodlatte currently holds the seat.

He announced on Wednesday morning he is ending the run immediately because of his cancer diagnosis.

In a statement, Elder wrote, "I want to beat Bob Goodlatte
and represent the Sixth District in Congress, but I have to beat
cancer first. Therefore I must sadly end my campaign, effective
immediately."
