Excitement for New Social Media Classes

A new program called “My Digital Life” is on its way to Virginia Schools. This program is designed to teach young teens about social media, and some teachers say this is a great idea.

Even students as young as middle-school aged are using social media sites like Facebook. The worry is that these students might now know how to use them in the right why. There is a fear of cyber-bullying, and that’s why this new program aims to prevent this type of bullying from occurring.

One Montevideo Middle School student said she completely understands why this program is coming.

“We really need to be educated: not only about the good stuff but also about what could happen if you misuse it,” said middle school student English Jackson.

English also says websites like Facebook and Twitter make bullying easier.

“Technology just makes it so much easier. They don’t even have to be there, so it doesn’t limit down just to school hours. It’s whenever you’re on Facebook; which is all the time.”

A technology teacher for Rockingham County Schools says it’s about time for a social media curriculum.

“It’s greatly needed. With fast internet, with cell phones, social media is ubiquitous. Everyone is carrying it on their body, and we’ve realized how important it is to teach it for years,” said teacher Joe Showker.

It’s something that Rockingham County Schools have been working on for a while, but Showker is already teaching students and faculty about internet safety.

“It’s important for our school age children. It’s important for their parents as well. The whole issue of privacy and reputation damage. Social media is your world where everyone else can see it.”

And where anyone can post comments that may be harmful.

“The downside of all this is bullying, and the damage that people do to each other through digital media,” said Showker.

English said she really supports the idea of these classes.

"Kids of all ages are having Facebook and cell phones and all this technology, so I think classes trying to prevent cyberbullying is a great idea."

Showker said Virginia is the one of the first states to tackle social media issues in schools. This new program will teach students from eighth through tenth grade about what’s appropriate to do online.
