Extra Students Means More Roommates in a Dorm Room

HARRISONBURG, Va -- Open a door to a residence hall at James Madison University and you may find students three to a room to save space. Roommates Haris Ghayas and Grayson Simmons got a letter earlier this year telling them they would have a third roommate.

“I was kind of shocked. I didn't even know you could do triple roommates, really,” said Ghayas.

Simmons said he remained optimistic when he received the letter.

“I knew there were some triples, so when I found out, I was like, 'Alright, some people do get this, so I hope it'll work out,'” said Simmons.

Both roommates agree it has worked out.

“We just have a lot of things in common. I'm just really grateful they're really good people and that I'm with them,” said Ghayas.

They say even if they had the option to move out, they would stay put.

The residence life director said more than 100 students are in similar situations because nearly 200 more students than usual decided to attend JMU.

One issue for the three students is space. An extra roommate means more printers, more refrigerators and more beds.

“It gets a little annoying from time to time dealing with that, but it's just a minor gripe, really. There's a bunch of things I like about it.”

The roommates say getting along is the key to a good first year in college.

The office of residence life director says overcrowding usually ends around Thanksgiving because some students either transfer or drop out. The school is also offering to pay some students up to $700 this semester for overcrowding.
