Extreme Weather Hurting Businesses

HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) -- Statistics released Tuesday by Small Business Majority report one in five Virginia small business owners had to lay workers off because of the extreme weather.

Four in ten owners reported damages between $5,000 and $25,000.

59 percent of those businesses closed anywhere from a week to as long as a month because of storms like we had Monday.

"With the snowy weather, a lot of people weren't coming downtown, they were advised to stay home so I decided to go ahead and close up shop for the day," said Jeremiah Young, who owns Court Square Coffee.

Young said doing a lot of work himself and low overhead protects him from winter weather pitfalls.
