Facebook and Microsoft say they have thousands of requests from the U.S. Government for user data.
A Facebook attorney says the requests range from tracking of federal fugitives, local crimes and terrorist threats. Facebook estimates the requests target 19,000 of their more than one billion accounts. Microsoft says more than 6,000 requests impacts 32,000 accounts.
Both companies say the information was released with permission from government. This comes on the heels of the NSA's wiretapping program.
