ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, Va. -- Andrea and John Rohrer, first-time mother and father, welcomed Tanner Chase, their baby, New Year's day about 8:30 a.m.

“I was excited,” said Andrea Rohrer. “There was another couple, so we weren't sure who was going to be first, but they told us it was us, and it was pretty neat.”

Andrea Rohrer's due date was December 22nd and Tanner came 10 days after that on the first day of 2013. Andrea Rohrer headed to the hospital just after ringing in the new year.

“I thought maybe he'd be a Christmas baby, but New Year's instead.”

Andrea and John Rohrer said they'll tell Tanner about his birthday and how long they waited for this day to come.

“Every day you'd hope it would be that day, then it wouldn't, and hope that it'd be the next day and it wasn't.”

John Rohrer said his family predicted a Christmas birth and then changed their guess to New Year's.

“First we thought he'd be a Christmas baby, and as time goes on, there was some family that was thinking, well, maybe it's going to be a New Year's baby. They were excited about that, too,” said John Rohrer.

John Rohrer described what it was like to wait 10 days after the due date to welcome his son.

“Just each day you're thinking it would be nice to get this done. He finally came, and it's good to be here.”

Andrea and John Rohrer said their families were thrilled to start the new year with the addition of Tanner.

“My dad had thought it would be really neat, but I was like, 'Nah, it probably won't happen,' but, yeah, it did,” said Andrea Rohrer.

As of about 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Tanner was the only baby born in Rockingham and Augusta Counties. No other babies were born at Shenandoah and Page Memorial Hospitals as of Tuesday afternoon.
