What's In the Farm Bill

By: The Associated Press

Here's a list of a few things contained in the farm bill:

  • A prohibition on lottery winners, convicted sex offenders and murderers from receiving food stamps.
  • A new revenue insurance subsidy that would pay farmers in the event of "shallow losses," or revenue losses incurred before their paid crop insurance kicks in.
  • A new insurance program for cotton growers designed to bring the U.S. industry into compliance with the World Trade Organization.

HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) -- The Senate approved a new farm bill that contains cuts to food stamps.

Some families will lose 1 percent of their benefits and will have to make even harder choices.

Cheryl Thomas is on food stamps and receives $50 dollars a month.

"That's just a meal. What can you do with 50 dollars? Nothing," said Thomas.

Melanie Harpine, the benefit programs supervisor with Harrisonburg Rockingham Social Services, said the cuts won't only hurt people, but also the community.

"It's going to hit other organizations harder. It's going to hit community resources, other family members are going to have to support them," said Harpine.

That's the dilemma Thomas now faces.

"I don't want to depend on them and I try not to. I only call them if I really, really, really, have to," said Thomas.

Harpine said the people she works with struggle enough as is and losing even more funding is going to put a lot of families in a hard place.

"Maybe they won't take their kid to see the dentist or the eye doctor, or something that's needed. They're going to have to make a cut somewhere and every families going to have a hard choice on where to make that cut," said Harpine.

With Thomas' benefits, the cuts will just add to her day to day battle.

"A lot of things I can't do, a lot of things I can't get. So I have to do what I have to do," said Thomas. is happy to provide a forum for commenting and discussion. Please respect and abide by the house rules:
