WEYERS CAVE-- On Wednesday and Thursday, local farmers are gathering at Blue Ridge Community College for a conference about building a sustainable local food system that connects people to the farmers selling produce.
Some of the different things being discussed, include broad topics like becoming more energy efficient, to more specific things, like what to do with dead live stock. About 200 people are registered to attend the event over the next two days and it features speakers from around the country. The event is put on every few years, most recently about 18-months ago.
The goal is to promote agriculture throughout the state, particularly in this region, which is home to four of the five most agriculture producing counties in the state. Organizers hope it can give the economy a boost. "For us, that's really important. Obviously with, the country trying to get out of recession and really to thrive again, we think that this is a good way for people to support local economies," said Kathy Holm, one of the planning co-chairs.
On Wednesday night, there is a buy fresh, buy local mixer planned to start a conversation between buyers and producers about the benefits of buying from farmers in the Valley.
