Fire Alarm Pull Box gets Recalled

HARRISONBURG --One common fire alarm pull box is a target of a recall and it may be one that you are familiar with. The Honeywell BG-10 fire alarm is one that you can find in many buildings. This isn't the first time the company has issued a problem with the alarm.

"Honeywell is not taking the responsibility of repairing them themselves. But they are simply sending out parts to the people who are affected by and it's up to them to repair it themselves," said Deputy Fire Marshall of Harrisonburg Arthur Miller.

If you have one of these, you have to fix it yourself. The o-ring that keeps the alarm in place can get stuck and cause the alarm not to go off.

"A very simple process in the end but getting to that end can be a little technical because you're dealing with a fire alarm that can be online and active. And as you start to do your repair, you could and very likely will certainly send a fire alarm to the fire department," said Miller.

Places like churches, public administration buildings, schools and apartments have them. Samantha Spiliadas lives in an apartment complex that uses the pull box. She said she isn't worried.

"If something happened and I had to pull the alarm, I probably would just start screaming anyways," said Spiliadas.

She said the apartment complex would fix the problem.

"If there is a fire, the first thing I am going to do is call 9-1-1 and the firefighters," said Spiliadas.

The alarm had other issues too. The screw holding it together would be locked too tight. This also caused it not to go off.

"We don't know of any failures in our area but we do know that these alarm boxes exist in our area," said Miller.

The Harrisonburg Fire Department suggests that you contact an alarm specialist to fix the current box to make sure you don't set it off while fixing it.
