HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) -- Good news for the Harrisonburg Fire Department.

The department to be upgraded from a Class 3 to a Class 2. Fire departments are rated from 10 to one, with one being the best.

Harrisonburg has been ranked a Class 3 for the last 10 years.

Out of the 48,000 fire departments in the United States, only 750 are rated Class 2.

The rating is based on an evaluation of the department's emergency communications and water systems.

Harrisonburg Fire Chief Larry Shifflett said he is proud of the new rating.

"It indicates to us that we're doing things that we need to be doing for the protection of our community and for the services that we provide to the citizens," said Shifflett.

The in-person evaluation back in April was a surprise, but Shifflett said his department was ready.

State Farm Insurance agent Anna Bryant said that the new rating has little effect on fire insurance rates.
