The Rockingham Fire Department said most fire in the county are caused by heating, cooking and electrical issues.
Rockingham County Lieutenant and Public Information Officer Karen Will said they try to educate people to prevent them.
However, if they do happen, families should have an emergency plan in hand to put in place before you call the fire department.
Rick Poland said he wouldn't know what to do if his home goes up in flames.
"I basically would hit the floor and run as much as anything," he said.
Poland said he should.
"You hope it doesn't happen but you really don't think about the worse," he said.
Will said many people don't have a plan.
"It's something again people don't like to think about. But you never know when it's gonna happen so why not be prepared," she said.
She said people should draw out a sketch of their home with possible exits.
Because if there's a fire no one should stay behind, even if it's to call 911.
"It's very important to get out as quickly as you can, once you're out, we have to have a safe meeting place where all the family can gather," Will said.
A place where families can make sure everyone got out safely. If you did not have time to get a cell phone to dial 911, ask a neighbor to call for help.
If someone is still inside on an upper floor, they should make a signal. She said this will make it easier for the fire department to locate the person.
"When it's way above the ground, they can try to put the window up, stay there and holler for help, wave a blanket, a pillow or something out the window," she said.
But she said before putting the plan in place, you should have your smoke detector checked.
"If they're 10 years or older, they should taken down and totally replaced," she said.
Poland said it makes sense having a plan when the moment comes you won't know what to do.
"You try to think you're mentally prepared but you're not," he said.
Will said most parent shouldn't be nervous of teaching the plan to their kids.
She said most kids are familiar with fire drills at school so doing it at home should not be that different.
