WEYERS CAVE, Va. (WHSV) -- Augusta County and other areas of the Valley are taking new volunteers for area volunteer fire companies.
Multiple volunteer fire chiefs recognize the need for new recruits.
At the Wilson Volunteer Fire Company, Chief Bobby Mays said that after a recent fire, three guys saw a house in flames and joined as volunteers.
In Elkton, crews said that it can be hard to get volunteers because many people are working two jobs already.
The Weyers Cave Volunteer Fire Company said about two new volunteers are joining a month.
The fire company provides training to members free of charge.
"Basically anybody who's looking to give some time back to the community. We are a more or less rural area and depending on pure career staff would be cost prohibitive," said Ian Heatwole, the president of the Weyers Cave Volunteer Fire Company.
The Augusta County Fire and Rescue Volunteer coordinator said for the first time, Valley Vocational Technical Center will be offering a fire fighter training class.
