Fire in Staunton Burns Home to the Ground

STAUNTON -- An early morning house fire on Lee-Jackson Highway burned a home to the ground.

Neighbors said they awoke to what they thought was the sound of thunder. However, when they looked out the window, they saw flames coming from the first floor of the home. When firefighters arrived on the scene, the home had already burned to the ground.

The initial call came in from a driver on Interstate 81 around 2:40 a.m.

Firefighters do not believe anyone was in the house when it happened. The owners had just sold the house to a neighbor last week.
