HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) -- First Night Harrisonburg organizers don't have final attendance numbers yet, but they say more people showed up this year.

Terry Burkhalter, the executive director of First Night, took down the First Night banner on Court Square Wednesday afternoon after what he calls a successful event.

He said he estimates nearly 3,500 people showed up for First Night, which is almost 2,000 more than 2012.

He doesn't have a total number of button sales, but said the money from those are not what makes First Night possible.

"Button sales are kept to a minimum to encourage people to come. We are very dependent on volunteers. We had over a hundred volunteers participate in the evening," said Burkhalter.

Burkhalter said button sales make up less than 20 percent of their revenue and they rely heavily on volunteers and donations from local businesses.
