With so many Americans off work for the Fourth of July, it was no surprise to see the rest stop in Weyers Cave off Interstate 81 so busy.
Jeela Gokmen is from Turkey and she visits her parents every summer. This year, she will travel many miles on her trip through America.
"We went up to Boston to visit some family up there. Last year we went to Indiana, to visit family. My husband will join us on Saturday. He likes to travel, so we'll go back down to Atlanta also," said Gokmen.
Her mother, Sue Bentley, said they always drive and they drive a long way.
"We might travel, 500 or 600 miles," said Bentley.
Jeela said gas prices have never been an issue.
"We love gas prices here, because right now in Turkey gas prices are at a low at $9.00 a gallon. Used to be $12.00 a gallon," said Gokmen.
Her parents live in Pilot, Va and they have been dealing with the fluctuating prices.
"They do live in a rural area, so they don't have many opportunities to take mass transit, or change their route. So, they just get on with it."
They are getting on even better this week with the current prices.
"We are pleased that they have come down, but, compared to hers we are always happy," said Bentley.
It is lucky for travelers who stop in Harrisonburg because this city boasts gas prices that are the lowest in the state.
The average cost of a gallon of gas is about $3.16 and last year it was about $3.41. In comparison to the rest of the nation, Virginia's average is much lower.
Across the U.S., people paid an average of $3.40 on Wednesday.
