Friends and family are remembering a woman who died in car crash on Monday.

Katie Higgins graduated from Stuarts Draft High School and became a social worker.

Megan Coyner said she met Katie Higgins at the Blue Ridge Community College seven years ago.

"She was selfless and giving. All you look for when you're looking for a best friend," Coyner said.
"When you were around here you couldn't feel but comfort and that's just straight from the heart, just love," Coyner said.

Katie died in a car crash in Augusta County on Monday.

For Coyner, the news is still hard to believe.

"She was such a careful driver and she is never doing things that she shouldn't do so it was kinda shocking," Coyner said.

She said it's sad to know she won't see Katie again. However, she said she's glad she had the chance to know her.

"She made you a better person just by being around her because she was so uplifting and a very special person," Coyner said.

Jennifer Coffey also remembers that special person who came into her life 10 years ago.

She met Katie at a day care center where they worked together.

Coffey said she was not only fun, but also reliable.

"In the past five years, I lost both of my parents and she has been a big part. She has been through two births of two of my kids. Just the every day life ups and downs. She was the one you could always call. She always had the time for you," Coffey said.

Coffey she wished she could have more time with Katie.

"I think that there's just a piece of us that's gonna be gone that it would definitely be noticeable. It's not something that it would just brush over," Coffey said.

Coyner said she will miss talking to her.

"I can still talk to her and I can't quite hear back from her, but I can still hear words in my head," Coyner said.

Katie's family said the best way to honor Katie is to send funds to Virginia Smiles in Fairfax at P.O. Box 2891.
